Maricel Maffini, an independent chemical safety expert, notes that the study’s findings represent only a small part of the larger picture. There are countless other chemicals beyond this list that have yet to be studied or regulated, and acknowledging this gap is crucial. By focusing on a single list of substances deemed “reliable” by industry and regulators, we’re essentially looking under the lamppost while ignoring the greater danger lurking in the shadows.
PFAS “forever chemicals,” which contaminate food wrappers and make them resistant to grease or water, have been linked to liver damage and immune system harm. Styrene, a likely carcinogen used in takeout packaging and refrigerated dairy containers, has leached into foods like yogurt and cream. Phthalates, added to plastics that hold vegetable oils flexible, are known hormone disruptors with devastating effects on development at low doses.
The Food Packaging Forum recommends introducing a “mixture allocation factor” – essentially a safety margin that accounts for the combined effects of multiple chemicals in a single exposure. This simple yet crucial step can make all the difference, but it requires regulators to rethink their approach to chemical evaluation. Currently, individual chemicals are assessed one by one, rather than being grouped together based on similar structures and properties.
Regulators should consider grouping hazardous chemicals together and pulling them from the market or not approving them until proven safe. The European Union’s 2023 plan to restrict PFAS is a step in the right direction. Additionally, we need to rethink our material safety standards. Inert materials like glass and stainless steel are often exempt from chemical analysis because they’re deemed non-reactive with food. However, what if these materials can leach chemicals into our food under different use conditions?
The American Chemistry Council and Food Packaging Coalition have yet to respond to Inside Climate News’ requests for comment, leaving a silence that speaks volumes about the industry’s willingness to engage with this pressing issue.
As we continue to navigate our increasingly complex food landscape, it’s essential that we prioritize transparency and accountability in chemical regulation. We need to ask tough questions: what more proof do we need of these chemicals’ dangers? What’s the real cost of inaction?
