Restoring Yosemite’s Wetlands: A Glimpse into a Sustainable Future

The restoration of Ackerson Meadow in Yosemite National Park is a testament to the power of collaborative effort and scientific expertise. For over a century, human activities had ravaged this critical wildlife corridor, draining its wetlands and eroding its ecological functions. The massive gully network that crisscrossed the area posed an existential threat to the meadow’s very existence.

By restoring the headwater meadow system, the team improved groundwater storage, increased flood protection, and enhanced resilience to drought and wildfire. These benefits will have far-reaching consequences for downstream communities within the Tuolumne River watershed.

This restoration project aligns with broader conservation goals, including California’s 30 by 30 Initiative, which aims to protect 30% of the state’s land and coastal waters by 2030. The Sierra Meadow Partnership goal seeks to restore 30,000 acres of meadow by 2030. Ackerson Meadow’s restoration serves as a model for these initiatives, demonstrating that collaborative efforts between science, partnership, and community can yield remarkable results.

Multiple partners were instrumental in the project’s success, including American Rivers, Yosemite Conservancy, and the National Park Service. Tribal participation was also crucial, with members contributing to revegetation, beaver dam analogue development, and on-site resource protection throughout the project. Volunteers played a significant role as well, contributing over 8,000 hours of support between 2021 and 2025.

As research studies continue to monitor the meadow’s recovery, Ackerson Meadow stands as a testament to what can be achieved when science, partnership, and community come together. Its restoration offers a glimpse into a sustainable future where human activities and environmental conservation are intertwined, rather than mutually exclusive.

    The Yosemite Wetlands Restoration Project is a textbook example of large-scale ecological engineering done right.
