Led by Hélène Huby, a veteran of Airbus and ArianeGroup, TEC has raised $450 million to build a reusable European heavy-lift launcher capable of carrying cargo and people into orbit. The goal is to dock with the International Space Station by 2028.
The funding round is significant not just for its size but also for its transatlantic backing. Atomico, EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, and NASA contributed to the round, giving TEC a solid foundation as it looks to challenge SpaceX.
However, Huby has been candid about the challenges ahead. “We need more money to build a launch pad, and to build the rocket itself,” she said in a press conference earlier this week. This pragmatism is welcome, especially given the ambitious scope of TEC’s plans.
The European space industry has long relied on SpaceX – or at least its technology – to propel its ambitions into orbit. Now, with companies like TEC and Isar Aerospace pushing the boundaries of reusability, there’s a chance for European players to catch up. The stakes are high: as Huby noted, half of Europe’s broadband communication could come from space within the next decade.
This requires not just massive rockets but also a reliable launch cadence – something that TEC plans to achieve through reusability. Full-flow stage combustion is a technology pioneered by SpaceX, now being replicated in Europe; it’s the most efficient engine cycle in the world.
TEC has already secured 10 Nyx missions and over $2 billion in contracts and commitments. However, getting to orbit – especially with reusable technology – takes time, resources, and expertise. The question remains whether TEC can meet its ambitious timeline.
