The crisis of space junk has been quietly building for decades, but its scale has only recently become impossible to ignore. Every week, over a tonne of debris falls back to Earth, a constant reminder that our addiction to satellite technology and rocket launches is taking its toll on the planet.
At least 36,000 pieces of debris larger than 10 centimetres are in orbit, with tens of millions more fragments scattered throughout. But it’s not just the quantity that’s alarming – it’s the speed at which this junk accumulates. With over 300 rockets launched last year alone, nearly four times the number from a decade ago, the risk of collisions and uncontrolled re-entry has skyrocketed.
The recent incident in Kenya, where a large metal ring from a rocket fell into farmland near Mukuku village, serves as a stark reminder of what’s at stake. Initially downplayed by officials as an “isolated” occurrence, experts warn that falling debris is becoming more frequent – with objects weighing over a tonne returning to Earth about once a week.
The United States Space Force has been tracking this trend closely, issuing alerts for nearly 820 objects entering Earth’s atmosphere last year. This represents a significant increase from just a decade ago, when the number was barely a fraction of that. The expansion of commercial satellite networks – led by SpaceX – has intensified the challenge.
One of the most concerning aspects is not just the immediate risks posed by falling debris but also the long-term consequences of our inaction. The Kessler syndrome, where collisions create more fragments in a chain reaction, could have devastating effects on Earth’s orbit and our ability to maintain functioning satellites. The International Space Station already carries out manoeuvres to avoid debris, and it’s only a matter of time before we see the first major casualty.
Predicting re-entry locations is also a growing concern – with even small errors in calculations shifting potential impact zones by hundreds of miles. This makes it difficult for authorities to prepare for worst-case scenarios, leaving us vulnerable to the whims of space junk.
Sean O’Keefe, a Syracuse University professor and former Nasa administrator, notes: “Humans have a lot of failure of imagination. We just can’t imagine that it will happen to us.” With SpaceX’s Starlink satellites set to account for 85 per cent of the risk to people on the ground and aviation from reentering space junk by the middle of the next decade, we’re running out of excuses.
Implementing stronger rules requiring spacecraft to use materials that fully burn up during re-entry is crucial. This means governments and companies must come together to develop more stringent guidelines – ones that reflect the growing reality of our space junk crisis. The current United Nations space debris guidelines are non-binding and were issued over a decade ago when far fewer satellites were in orbit.
It’s time for us to take responsibility for our actions in space and acknowledge the damage we’re causing. We can no longer afford to ignore the ticking time bomb that is space debris – one that threatens not just our technology but our very way of life on Earth. The question now is: will we act before it’s too late?
