The recent earthquake that struck Peru has left a trail of damaged buildings, power cuts, and injured people. The quake’s impact was felt across large parts of the country, including the capital city of Lima, where tremors were reported.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), Thursday’s quake had a magnitude of 6.7, making it one of the stronger seismic events to hit Peru in recent times. The epicenter was located near the small settlement of Aniso in the southern Ayacucho region, known for its rugged terrain and sparse population.

The damage is extensive, with 22 homes and six schools damaged, and over 9,000 properties losing power. These numbers are not surprising given Peru’s location along the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. The country has a history of seismic activity, with Thursday’s incident being just the latest in a long line of powerful quakes.

Peru is not alone in its vulnerability to earthquakes; Colombia and Venezuela have also been hit by devastating quakes in recent months. In August, a 6.4-magnitude quake struck Colombia, killing over 300 people. Twin earthquakes that hit Venezuela in June left more than 6,000 dead.

The region’s fragile infrastructure and resilience to natural disasters are symptoms of a larger problem. Many countries in South America lack robust seismic-resistant design and construction practices. Buildings, roads, and bridges are often designed with short-term gains in mind rather than long-term sustainability, putting lives at risk.

Peru’s government has been swift to respond to the disaster, with Defence Minister Rafael Belaunde leading emergency efforts. However, rebuilding and strengthening infrastructure requires more than just a short-term response. It demands a fundamental shift in how the country approaches urban planning and development, prioritizing long-term sustainability over short-term gains.

The answer lies not just in rebuilding damaged buildings but also in investing in robust seismic-resistant design and construction practices. This will require sustained investment in disaster preparedness and resilience. Only by acknowledging the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes can we hope to build stronger foundations for the future – ones that will withstand the test of time, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.
